The proliferation of fan-made modifications (“mods”) for indie games raises technical and legal questions regarding portability, dependency management, and end-user license agreements. This paper presents a case study of a hypothetical portable mod for Mirror 2: Project X (KAGAMI WORKS, 2022). We analyze the methods for decoupling mod files from the original installation directory, the use of relative paths and runtime patching, and the performance impact. Results show that a portable mod can reduce load times by 12% on average but introduces version incompatibility risks.
