Abstract This paper introduces Ramdisk-Free, a lightweight software tool and design pattern that provides the speed advantages of RAM-backed storage without constructing a traditional persistent ramdisk device. Ramdisk-Free leverages ephemeral in-memory file objects, OS memory-mapped files, and cooperative application-level caching to deliver ultra-low-latency I/O for high-performance computing, data analysis, and privacy-sensitive workloads while avoiding the complexity, persistence pitfalls, and security risks associated with conventional ramdisks. We present architecture, implementation techniques across major OSes, performance evaluation, security and reliability trade-offs, and practical use cases.
