The movie takes off when Maggie's brother, Nick (Matt Dillon), tries to capture Herbie and sell him for a hefty sum. However, Herbie manages to evade capture and teams up with Maggie to compete in a major NASCAR tournament. Along the way, they encounter a series of wacky characters, including a rival NASCAR driver, Owen (Michael Keaton).
